It is noted that Kestner’s passion for birdwatching lasts for many decades, and back in the mid-80s he managed to become famous for his status as the first ornithologist who managed to meet animals from every family of birds, allocated at that time. Towards the end of the decade, he discovered a hitherto unknown species of birds in the Colombian mountain forests, belonging to the genus Pitt’s Anteaters. This species was later named Grallaria kaestneri in Kestner’s honour.
