So far, experts are speculating only about the area of the accumulation, i.e. the “tip of the iceberg”, and how many trees are hidden under it is still a mystery.
Due to the cold and mostly dry conditions in the Arctic, wood can be perfectly preserved for tens of millennia. And while many of the trunks in the delta look like they fell in the past year, in reality they are several centuries old. Data from carbon analyses of some samples suggest an age of 1.3 millennia.
